NVH Consulting - Modal Analysis and Operating Deflection Shape (ODS)
Modal analysis is the process of analyzing and predicting structural dynamic behavior in terms of frequency, damping and mode shapes. Based on the dynamic properties of an elastic structure, acoustic characteristics can be predicted and, moreover, controlled and optimized.
In contrast, the Operating Deflection Shape describes the behavior of the structure directly in its operating environment when vibration is forced.
 
An example for a measurement setup is shown in the figure on the left.

Getting modal parameters and understanding the resonance frequencies and its mode shape helps the design engineer
to understand how the structure will vibrate when excited by the real condition,
to optimize the structural system for noise and vibration applications,
to verify and adjust the mathematical models of the structure,
to locate structural weak points and evaluate problem fixes,
to troubleshoot noise and vibration problems in existing mechanical systems,
to construct a dynamic model for components of a structure which are too difficult to model analytically,
to predict the effects of modifications to the original structure,
to use the modal synthesis methods - substructure methods.

The operating deflection shape of the subframe is shown in this figure. Operating Deflection Shape Analysis is useful to investigate the vibration deflection shapes of mechanical components typically during standard operation.
